The second day was great and we were all over the place. We drove to Biscuitville and found out it was a fastfood place. We ate there anyway and it was actually fantastic.
Right from there we headed over to the FREE Museum of Natural History in the downtown area. They have the only preserved Dinosaur heart (I think) and a cool dinosaur diorama.
The best part of the day was when we went to Cat's Cradle in Carrboro (right near Chapel Hill) to see a band called Surfer Blood. We walked around the town and found a restaurant in an old, redone trainstation. We sat in a train car and ate cheap and amazing mahi mahi fish tacos!
After the trainstation, we went over to the show as I anxiously awaited finally hearing this band. They seemed to have blown up out of now where and I have heard totally mixed reviews. With a name like surfer blood, I really didn't know what to expect. Could it be surf rock? maybe some kind of weird metal music? As we approached the door we heard the first band was already into their set. Only one or two other people were sitting outside and for whatever reason we hesitated to go in. A kid walked over and started talking. He seemed nice. He asked who we came to see and I paniced for a second. Could he be IN a band? If he is should I act interested despite not really having any idea if I like his music? What could bring on such curiousity? I figured he asked the question out of social awkwardness and responded "We came for Surfer Blood." He responded "they are going on next." Within a second I knew I should have named any one of the other bands. He continued "Yeah, well I kind of record on some of their records.... we are totally good friends".... (or something like that.) I tried changing the conversation quick. I said "OH! well we are going on a road trip. Have any tips for things to check out in Asheville?" His response "You should go to Austin." I continued by asking him about a breakfast burrito shack I have only heard a million great things about. Jason (As I will call him) explains he has never been to Austin despite recommending it to us with enthusiasm and instead offered to talk to the band about it. (Why the hell would I want to ask the band about breakfast burritos?) We tried to seem uninterested even though I have though about that Austin breakfast everyday since we started planning the trip.
Oh no...... Jason looks excited... "Conor this is TJ, the drummer from Surfer Blood."
"Oh hey how's it going"
(Jason) "they are asking about breakfast burritos in Austin"
(TJ) "I've never heard of it..."
A little put off by the general cocky attitude radiating from this guy (and Jason, the guy with an ego for just knowing this other guy) I say "Well I always assumed Breakfast Burritos were a sacred item in Austin"
I got a chuckle from them at least...
"Allie and Erin, lets go inside"
