Austin and more austin

It is hard to write this post due to the overwhelming amount of food and lack of any real life experiences. We have really lived life through our taste buds. A lot of people know of my obsession with Anthony Bourdain. Books and TV. Upon arriving here, erin;s coworkers told us how he was in Austin recently and spoke highly of the tacos sold from trailers. Luckily, before I even heard of it, I stumbled upon a taco trailer called Torchy's. I've eaten it three days in a row. My favorite taco has a fried poblano pepper, fried avocado, egg, spicy carrots and a poblano ranch sauce on top! amazing!!!
To preface, I love underground comics and one of my favorites is a guy called Ben Snakepit. He has written a daily comic strip about his day and one reason I have been so excited about Austin is that Snakepit is focused on this very area. The coolest thing about this leg of the trip is that Erin's house is in the very neighborhood (the north loop) as a lot of the places snakepit talks about. So, the comic focuses a lot on underground music and funny enough my roommate stayed over his house one night while he was on tour with his band. Jarrett, the roommate, raved about a breakfast place called tamale house that I have heard of previously through the comics. SOOOOO, as we are pulling in to Erin's house, I saw the sign for Tamale House and I knew I had to be their the following morning. I did (and again today). Now, this place has good food... but not amazing. Their IS a sliding scale though due to the extremely low costs. 85 cents breakfast tacos for gods sake! But I decided to upgrade... the $3.50 breakfast called migas. I didn't know what it was but anytime I heard anyone talk/ review the place they raved about this breakfast. It ended up being tortillas scrambled in with the eggs, potatoes, cheese and ranchero sauce to top it off. I really loved it.
Today after leaving Tamale House, we decided to stop at another trailer kinda thing that sold ices. Allie got an almond ice drizzled with sweetened condensed milk and Erin's boyfriend Andy got a spearmint ice with vanilla ice cream on top.

Here is a picture of pizza. Doesn't it look weird? if you could zoom in and clarify the image, you would see FANCY cheese and a WINE REDUCTION SAUCE. It sounds tasty but it really isn't, I felt like i was betraying my home. It was TEN BUCKS! And it was also a little baby size. We vowed from that point on (about an hour ago) to not eat pizza until Chicago. Mind you I am expecting to be disappointed with the deep dish monstrosity but it deserves to be tasted AND THEN shut down. This southern pizza should just be criticized down right.

We also went to another place mentioned in Snakepit but made famous in it's own right (with greats like Johnny Cash and pretty much any punk/ rock band worth listening to) named Emo's. It just happened to match up that a band me and Allie like called Andrew Jackson Jihad was playing. Now this band is kind of interesting. They don't seem like anything special at first but if you give any of their records a couple listens you will find yourself humming their tunes in lines at the grocery and similar establishments. They have an endearing satirical quality to their lyrics but some how their extremely positive attitudes shine through. The actual venue had some major cons and some major pros. First of all, ALL of the ticket money goes to the bands. It helps the more realistic type of band come through Austin. You know the bands who have actual jobs and just play music for the sheer enjoyment of play music and the pure passion of beliefs and ideals....... anyway. Some serious negatives are pretty much averything else. I know that isn't to even of a pro and con but looking back I don't think I would ever sit through a whole show at that venue. We went to see the headliner and sat through two bands that thought it was completely ok to take 45 mins to set up their instruments. Blah blah blah bands stuff. In the end the first three hours of us being at Emo's was horrid but AJJ's set was worth it. They really made the night.
