at this very moment we are in monterey, california. our blogging has kind of fallen to the wayside, due to the lack of working internet connections, so i will try to catch everyone up in the least boring way possible.
we drive from albuquerque to cottonwood, arizona, taking a scenic route through the painted desert and the petrified national forest. cottonwood is a small sleepy town and at night it is so humid and warm that it feels like bathwater. we go in the pool and talk to a couple on their eleventh anniversary. they tell us to watch out for scorpions and that you can see a mountain from anywhere in arizona. the next day we drive to jerome, which is an old mining town on a mountain with a bunch of art galleries and old buildings and alleged ghosts. then we go to rock slide park in sedona. its like going to the beach, sort of, but better because the current of the river and the algea on the rocks makes it like a natural water slide. it starts raining, but we don't mind. we just sit in the water and watch the rain make drops around us.
the next day we leave cottonwood and drive to the grand canyon where we are camping. we walk around the rim of the canyon a bunch of times in different places and pay to much for food and watch the sun set make silhouettes of all the mountains.
we drive to las vegas which is definately the complete opposite of camping in the grand canyon. we stay in the luxor which is a casino/hotel housed in a giant pyramid. we walk around the different casinos with different themes of famous places. caesar's palace is my favorite and they have an hourly show of the fall of atlantis with an animatronic fire-breathing dragon.
we gladly move on from vegas to sparks nevada, where paul lives. us and paul drink a lot of coffee and talk about the stock market and global warming among other things, just like old times. he also shows us around. we go to lake tahoe, which is very beautiful with mountains and boulders and crystal clear water. we see the largest astroturf park and the marina. And we see all the taxidermied animals at this giant sports supply store that has a ferris wheel in the middle. we say goodbye to paul and head toward california. we meant to go to fresno, but i was getting grumpy, so we just stopped at a hotel on the side of the highway to eat and sleep and just be out of the car.
the next day we drive to one of my most anticipated stops, which is the madonna inn. the whole place is so great. our room looks like i had created it in a dream, in fact the whole place did. its so good.
today we drive up route one through big sur. it almost looks too perfect, like a movie set or something and we kind of forgot to take pictures. now we are in monterey and you are up to speed.
